Idaho Enlisted Association's trip to D.C. March 2009

My Washington D.C. trip for EANGUS March 2009

By Steve Vinsonhaler

I have always wanted to go Washington D.C. and look around realizing this is where it all began.  As Chris, Darren and I were meeting with folks in EANGUS and meeting with our delegates, you can’t help but to be in awe of the atmosphere.  There are many different groups protesting various issues.  Life seems to fly right on by there.  On Monday March 1st, we tried to meet with Senator Risch, and instead met with one of his staffers.  On Tuesday March 2nd, our busiest day, we attended Senator Crapo’s constituent meeting and shortly after getting there, Senator Risch showed up.  Senator Risch acknowledged the mistake made with our meeting and we ended up getting our picture taken with both Sen. Crapo and Risch.  That was cool.  Then we sat down with Kelly, Sen. Crapo’s staffer, and discussed our issues with her affecting the guard.  After our meeting with Kelly, I started feeling really good about things.  It felt like we were making a difference already.

Earlier on Tuesday we attended a breakfast meeting honoring Sen. Chambliss of Georgia for helping to support the guard with legislative issues.  It was amazing to see the top of the Washington monument from afar realizing not far is the Lincoln Memorial and just going WOW.  On the way home Tuesday night, I started to realize the lifestyle our delegates and others lead.  It can be both addicting and taken for granted.  Our delegates seemed to be on top of things.  They seemed in tuned with Idaho issues and very supportive of the guard.  I appreciated the opportunity very much.  I look forward to the challenges we face and continue working with our representatives.  I appreciate and thank the members of our organization.  As members, we need to step up to make EANGUS here in Idaho a great organization for years to come.
